December/January Newsletter

Welcome to the December/January Newsletter. This winter we’re happy to bring you programs including our Heart Sutra Weekend and two pilot programs: Morning Public Sitting and Improv Comedy Workshop.

Morning Sitting will be Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30 – 7:30 am. There will be no regularly scheduled meditation instructor; please see our website for more information about meditation instruction, or see this video from David Nichtern for a brief introduction to the meditation technique.

Our Improv Comedy Workshop is an opportunity to develop the skills of playful presence. No registration or prerequisites are required. Improv Comedy will be on Monday evenings at 7 pm, with the exception of certain dates including Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, and Council Meeting dates (TBA). Please see our calendar to verify scheduled dates.


Heart Sutra Weekend

December 7 – 9

During this intensive study and practice weekend, we will take a deep dive into the Heart Sutra. It is a rich traditional Buddhist teaching which is chanted all over the world by most sects of Buddhism. No prerequisites; open to everyone. Save the Date: Dön Season and Shambhala Day

Shambhala Day is February 5, 2019. We’re starting to make plans for our Shambhala Day celebration, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, February 10, and this new year season begins with Dön Season and Mamo Chants starting on January 25. Please watch for further announcements about the Mamo Chants schedule and Shambhala Day events.

If you’d like to get involved in Shambhala Day planning, please join us at our December Council Meeting, December 3 at 6:30 pm.


Saturday Salon

December 15, 10 am – 2 pm
January 12, 10 am – 2 pm

Join us for our monthly Saturday Salon! Saturday Salons will offer an opportunity for open meditation practice, community gathering and conversation, and special practices. No registration is required; drop in as you wish. Visit our website for more information and the schedule for the December and January Salons.


December/January at the Center

Regular Weekly Programs

These programs are free and open to the public.
No experience required.
Donations are gratefully accepted.

  • Sunday Public Sitting: Morning Chants and Meditation start at 9:30 am, Sitting and Walking Meditation 10 – 11 am. Come to one or stay for both. Meditation instruction is available at both sessions.
  • Wednesday Public Sitting: Sitting Meditation 7 – 7:30 pm, followed by Evening Chants. Meditation instruction is available. No Wednesday Public Sitting on January 2.
  • Morning Public Sitting: Mondays and Thursdays 6:30 – 7:30 am. This is a pilot program; please check our calendar to verify scheduled dates.
  • Heart of Recovery (Sarpashana): Meditation and dharma studies for those in recovery, Tuesdays 7 – 8 pm. Open to any addictions.

  • Learn to Meditate: January 2, 6:30 pm. Meditation instruction and an introduction to the Shambhala Center, with Q&A and refreshments. Free, no registration.
  • Saturday Salon: January 12, 10 am – 2 pm. Open meditation, conversation, and other practices. No registration. See the event listing for schedule details.
  • Shambhala Sadhana: January 21, 6 pm. A meditation and chant practice to deepen our insight and feeling of basic goodness and enlightened society. Open to the community at the full moon, no registration.
  • Mamo Chants: beginning January 25. The schedule will be posted as it is finalized; please check our calendar.

  • Winter Day-Long Retreat in Tucson: December 22. For meditators at all levels. Details and registration at the Tucson Shambhala website.
  • Winter Weekthun in Los Angeles: December 26 – January 1. A weeklong meditation retreat. No prerequisites. Details and registration at the Los Angeles Shambhala website.
  • The Art of Being Human in Tucson: January 4 – 6. A learn to meditate weekend. Details and registration at the Tucson Shambhala website.
